Why did the Marines send me a letter? ›

These letters are your recruit's private conversations shared with you in confidence. For 13 weeks, you are your recruit's sounding board for everything related to the trials and tribulations he or she is undergoing in recruit training. You are the "safe" place for your recruit to share everything.

Mail arrives at the Recruit Depot Monday through Saturday. Depending on the training schedule, there may be a few days delay getting the mail into you recruit's hand, with the posssibly of further delays in your recruit having an opportunity to open and read his or her mail.

Marine recruits will send their first letter home seven to nine days after they arrive. The letter will include their mailing address with company and platoon information.

Marine Corps Basic Recruit Training has two locations: Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina. Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California.

In the United States Marine Corps, Drill Instructors are not permitted to read a recruit's letters. Not directly. But they would make us open any packages in front of them to make sure they did not contain any contraband.

Mail Call is every duty day, Monday – Friday (no mail on holidays). One thing all Trainees have in common, they want to hear their name. Mail is what keeps them going, keeps them connected to the 'real' world, reminds them you care and haven't forgotten about them.

What do Marines say when they call home? ›
