The hills north of Homlett are really quite pleasant, full of various types of trees, flowers, and shrubbery, as well as a multitude of wild animals. They go on for several miles until they run up against the Great Mountains to the northwest. Unfortunately, like many wilder areas, they might possibly conceal many dangers, both natural and unnatural.

The gnomes went to opposite sides of the road, looking for pretty flowers. Xantria, despite listening to older relatives drone on about them in her youth, couldn't really remember the types and appearances of various flowers. She found a few that were okay, but then found several very pretty purple and green flowers that smelled wonderful.

Carla had collected several little bouquets of flowers, though hers were mostly rough looking ones that were probably considered weeds by most people. She looked up at Xantria as the other gnome spoke, and her smile turned to a look of fear and she yelled.
"PUT THOSE DOWN!!! QUICKLY! BEFORE...."
Before Xantria could react to Carla's surprising outburst, the pretty flowers she was holding puffed some pollen into her face, making her dizzy.

Carla also kept going from too skinny tree to too skinny tree, unable to find one that covered her body nearby.
Out of the trees came six large ants, each about the size of a large dog. They rushed to where the flowers were, and looked like they were sniffing and snuffling around. Then one looked up and caught a hint of movement across the road. It immediately charged across the rough trail towards the gnomes. The other five started looking up at where their brother was going.

They weren't that silent as they moved back into the trees but the other ants also got distracted and disturbed by the weird smell

Back in school, Xantria enjoyed nature and nature classes, but didn't really retain much (I was that way with my Psychology classes).
Everyone pondered what they'd just seen, but it was Derg who snapped his fingers as something occurred to him.
"I'll bet this means that the hive, or whatever, realizes that there was something wrong. Two groups of the little ones didn't come back, so they sent bigger ones. They will probably start sending more and more large ants."
He looked at the others.

Everyone runs, with the humans getting ahead of the dwarf and gnomes.
They round a corner, and see a group of people in the middle of Ants.
From behind Derg and Milton, they can see Bertram and Ernest, the two young fighters who they had med at the Mill a few days ago. Near them was an elven man in delicate clothes, tossing firebolts around.
There were a dozen small ants, all trying to grab at the three of them.
there were also four of the larger horse sized ants attacking them from over the heads of the smaller ants. One of the bigger ants had grabbed a half elf woman in leather armor, who was unconscious, and seemed to be about to turn and head back into the woods.

Carla cast a spell as well, sending a sling stone hurling at the big ant with a speed that is hard to follow with the naked eye. it hits, and the Ant stopped, stumbling a bit. It looked very wounded and dropped the woman on the ground as it stumbled.
Derg ran up and chopped an ant in half with his battle axe, but the rest of the guys don't seem to have much luck.

4 of the small ants succumbed to the smell of the honey and they head over to then small pool of goopy stuff.
Dreg, Milton and Grux kill three ants. Bertram hits but his hammer skipped off the carapace. Bertram's spear bounced off a carapace as well.
The three big ants hit Milton and Dreg, and hit Ernest again. Ernest falls
there are three small ants left trying to grab Bertram and Ernest. One of the small ants grabs Ernest and starts slowly pulling him towards the woods.
The big ant picked up the half elven woman in leather again.

The firebolt hits a glancing blow, but doesn't penetrate the carapace.
Dreg and bertram kill two more small ants. Milton totally skewered the one trying to carry Ernest away.
The female elf sent another firebolt at a big ant, hurting it.
There are no more small ants attacking the party, though there are four bathing in the honey.
Carla fired her speeding bullet spell, hitting the big ant, blowing it in half.
The three remaining big ants attack. Bertram takes another hit, as does the female elf, who falls, and Dreg, who looks very wounded.

Xantria hit A1 a nice hit on the back, causing severe burns.
Derg called for him and the guys to attack "the one by the tunnel", and they all hurl sling stones at A4.
Derg hit it hard in the thorax, and Milton got a lucky shot which smashed it in the neck, causing bad damage. A4 looked almost dead. Grux tried to hurl sling stones, and even managed to hurl 2 of them, but they both missed.
With disgust and anger the dwarf threw his sling down. "Stupid thing!!"
Carla saw that Xantria had hurt A1 badly, and rubbed her hands together. It threw out a small lightning bolt at A1. The ant tried to avoid it, but ended up turning right into it! It smashed into the ant's face and blew it apart. A1 fell dead.
The other ants climbed out of the pit and attacked the men. They bit with pincers. Derg dodged aside fairly well. Milton wasn't as agile as Derg, but he managed to dodge as well. Grux took a hard hit, however, as the pincers pinched the dwarf hard.
Then the ants attacked with stingers on the back of their abdomen, whipping their backsides around to hit. However, they seemed a little off balance after climbing out of the pit, and missed.

Now out of the tunnels, the Ants do much better.
Derg gets a good shot that finished off his ant.
But Milton and Grux, swinging a spear and a dwarven axe, aren't able to connect.
Even the spells and lightning of Xantria and Carla aren't able to find purchase.
The two remaining ants attack Milton and Grux. The dwarf is able to duck down and dodge, but Milton is stung by A3. The spearman yells in pain and nearly falls to his knees. He looked really hurt.

Perhaps it's seeing Milton injured so badly, but the men rally hard to attack the ants.
Derg smashed his battle axe into A3, chopping off its abdomen. Milton, weakly, jabbed up hit spear and finished it off.
Grux hit his Ant, A2, hard as well, injuring it badly.
Then Carla lined up both hands and send a lightning bolt right into its neck, blowing its head off.
As they fought, Xantria snuck behind milton and healed him. He gasped with relief, his injuries completely gone.
The combat was over.
Grux said a prayer to Gortalla, and cast a heal on himself
Milton looked at Xantria with wide eyes, the slender young man seemingly very impressed.
"Wow! That was some magic, little lady!"

Unfortunately, this time 6 giant ants came out of the pit.
Derg hit A1 really well with his sling, but unfortunately Milton missed with his shot.
Grux threw a stone at A1 and hit, surprising everyone, especially the dwarf. A1 was hurt very badly.
Then Xantria shot her fire bolt and finished A1 off.
Carla leveled her hands and shot lightning at A6, hurting it badly.
Then the ants charged. They made it to the adventurers, but the party could attack again first.

Derg and the others got their melee weapons out. Derg swung his axe, but the ant dodged aside.
Milton got a hit on the carapace of A3, though it was a small hit.
Grux swing his dwarven axe twice, hitting once with a solid strike on the thorax of A4
A5 and the wounded A6 approached Carla and Xantria. Carla lashed out with lightning, but missed A6.
Xantria, however, caught the charging ants with her thunderwave, knocking them back. The vibrations hurt 5 and killed 6
The ants by the men could attack, though.
2 missed the nimble Derg, while 3 and 4 hit Milton and Grux with their mandibles. The spearman was hit with a solid hit to the shoulder, while the dwarf only suffered a glancing blow to the side.

Derg swung his battle axe, but it didn't hit solidly enough and bounced off A2's carapace
Milton got a good hit with his spear and struck his already wounded A3 in the thorax which killed the creature.
Grux got into a good routine with his axe, and struck A4 twice, wounding it severely.
Xantria hit A5 with her fire bolt, and Carla hit that same ant with her suit's electricity, causing major damage between the two of them (more from the fire, though).
The ants attacked.
A2 hit Derg with its pincers, scoring a hit on his arm.
A4 ran up on Grux and knocked the dwarf prone, cutting him with its pincers and stinging him with its stinger. The dwarf seemed to have managed to avoid getting much of the poison, but it was still too much, and Grux collapsed.
A5 ran at the two little folk who were harrassing it, and attacked Xantria. It lunged with its pincers and stinger, but the little cleric was too quick for it.

Dreg seemed to roar in anger from his injury, and swung his axe with all his might. It split A2's head down the middle, killing it.
Milton turned to A4, standing over Grux, and stabbed at it, hurting the already wounded creature, who turned to him.
Xantria stabbed at A5, but she wasn't able to get a good hit while trying to dodge.
Carla rushed up and cast her curing spell on Grux, which revived him.
A4 reared up over Milton, slashing him with its pincers, and stinging him. He collapsed on the ground.
A5 reared up over Xantria, but the smaller person managed to dodge again, though the stinger caught her cloak and ripped it. She saw the ant's poison spray across her field of vision, missing her face by inches.

OOC: Another 5E rule I missed. Thank you. :)
Derg rushed to A4 and swung his axe, but missed the skittery ant. Grux got to his feet and swung his axe as well, but missed badly. Carla, realizing that killing the ant needed to be done before she could properly heal Milton, shot her electricity at the ant, but it ducked out of the way.
Then the ant lunged at her. She backed up and got out of its grasp just in time.
Xantria stabbed at her enemy and did some damage to the badly injured ant, but it was still up.
Unfortunately, being in dagger ranged proved dangerous, as her foe lunged at her and grabbed her with its pincers and stung her with its stinger in a rapid succession.
OOC: Xantria takes 8 points of damage, and must make a Constitution save DC12 or take 8 poison damage (half if saves)

The party waited by the treeline, watching smoke come out of the cave. Soon dozens of the smaller, dog sized ants rushed out, heading for the rocky plains below. This rush lasted for a bit, with almost a hundred similar ants pouring out. Milton started to stand and rush out, but
Derg put a hand on the smaller human's shoulder
"No. Let these go. We want the queen"
Soon enough, the smaller ants petered out, and were soon replaced by the larger, horse sized warrior ants. Then, after a half a dozen of the large ants came an ant that was larger still. It was the size of a snail house, with powerful pincers and a large stinger on its massive abdomen

FLAMING SPHERE
2nd-level conjuration
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 60 feet
Components: V, S, M (a bit of tallow, a pinch of
brimstone, and a dusting of powdered iron)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute
A 5-foot-diameter sphere of fire appears in an
unoccupied space of your choice within range and lasts
for the duration. Any creature that ends its turn within 5
feet of the sphere must make a Dexterity saving throw.
The creature takes 2d6 fire damage on a failed save, or
half as much damage on a successful one.
As a bonus action, you can move the sphere up to 30
feet. If you ram the sphere into a creature, that creature
must make the saving throw against the sphere's
damage, and the sphere stops moving this turn.
When you move the sphere, you can direct it over

Xantria casts her rolling ball of fire, and it impacted the queen on her abdomen. She let out a squeal of pain. The other ants near her tried to extinguish the fire, getting burned themselves.
Derg swung his battle axe and struck A8 hard. Milton hit with his spear, but it was a glancing blow.
Grux also got a good hit on A5, while Carla zapped it with her electricity

Derg makes his his death save. Wish I'd gooA8, however, linged at Milton, hitting the young 8d because Milton, perhaps distracted by seeing his friend in trouble, hit the ant a glancing blow that slid off its tough carapace.
A8, however, lunged at Milton, hitting the young Spearman with mandible and stinger.
Milton is poisoned.
A5 slashed Carla with its mandible, hurting the gnome badly, but she was still up.
Grux hit A5 with his dwarven axe, then Carla blasted it again with electricity and it fell.
Meanwhile, the warrior ants by the queen were getting creative, and started digging. It was unclear what they were doing at first, but then Xantria realized that they were trying to extinguish the ball of fire with huge clumps of dirt.
OOC: I can't find any rules on this, but I'm counting it as a crude non magical Dispel Magic. However, because it's unconventional, I'll let Xantria make a save for her spell. make a d20 save with your best stat and proficiency

Meanwhile, A8 stood over Derg as the axe man struggled to live. Milton rushed up with Grux to attack the giant ant. The dwarf, unfortunately, tripped over Derg and nearly fell. Milton, however, stabbed with his spear and killed the ant.
Carla blasted at the queen, but her lightning missed.

Two of the warrior ants tried again to smother the fiery sphere.
OOC: They "rolled" a 12 to dispel. Go ahead and roll to compete with that.
The queen screeched in pain, from fire and lightning, and two other warrior ants turned and charged Carla.
The queen looked very hurt.
Milton tried to revive and stabilize Derg, but was unable to.
Grux the dwarf rushed over to help defend Carla.
The dwarf interceded, and was bitten by one of the ants.
Grux slashed into the ant, and Carla zapped it.

They headed into the cave, and found a long tunnel that went through many rooms that were abandoned. They eventually found a central chamber with many egg chambers and storage areas. Most were empty, but where was a central area with piles of dead bodies, most of it gone to just bones.
